Spillages

Bin spillages are a signifiant and recurring challenge on our bin rounds. This is mainly due to persistent birdlife able to get past the various bin protection measures, overfilled or incorrectly filled bins, unstable bin placements and bins placed roadside well in advance of collection. For our team and of course the community, it is an ongoing unsightly drama.

Whilst other waste management companies do not provide a clean-up service, we can do so for an additional charge. If it’s not reasonable to charge we won’t (eg. a couple of toilet rolls or wrappers) but major spills will incur a fee by agreement or if called out. Spillages at the time of placements are attended to immediately.

Addressing these issues involves a combination of practical measures, such as:
✅ obtain locking mechanisms for your FOGO, landfill & recycling bins and make sure they are fully engaged
✅ consider a dedicated bin storage solution or if possible, strategically place your bins rather than leave them out in the open
✅ provide a suitable level area roadside, particularly if on a gradient, to help bins stay upright
✅ ensure the correct rubbish is placed in the correct bins - all food waste must go into the FOGO, not landfill bin
✅ if overfilling is an issue, obtain larger or additional bins
✅ always make sure the lid is fully closed
✅ don’t leave waste next to bins - if it doesn’t fit in the bin, wait until the next collection, or take it with you or to a transfer station
✅ bins should be placed out no more than 24 hours before collection

Finally, we understand that cockatoos are a nuisance, but please remember that they are a protected native species under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is an offence to injure or kill them. The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is the responsible authority for all wildlife including cockatoos. To discuss cockatoo management, contact DEECA on 136 186.
The struggle is real for some of our coastal towns but every little bit counts to help keep waste in the right place.
